The IUPAC-UNESCO-UNIDO Safety Training Program allows safety experts from developing countries to learn about safety and environmental protective measures by visiting and working in plants of IUPAC Company Associates in the industrialized world. IUPAC, with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the United Nations International Development Organization (UNIDO), have established and maintained the Safety Training Program to promote interactions between developed countries and the developing world to disseminate state-of-the-art knowledge on safety and environmental protection in chemical production.
Each scientist or engineer accepted into the Safety Training Program is assigned to an IUPAC Company Associate in an industrialized country. The period of training is typically one to three weeks. Accommodation, subsistence and travel expenses are provided for all trainees.
Successful candidates are professional scientists and engineers who are currently:
- Involved at a supervisory or managerial level in chemical companies, government institutions or scientific institutions;
- Engaged in aspects of safety and environmental protection in chemical, pharmaceutical, or biotechnological production or in the teaching of these fields;
- Have the ability to influence safety practices in their places of employment and elsewhere within their home country.
The Safety Training Program was reactivated in 1999 with the supportof UNESCO and UNIDO. Dr MarkC. Cesa (U.S.A) is the Coordinator of the program.
Five international Fellows have received training at IUPAC CompanyAssociate Host Companies in the U.S.A., Japan, and South Africa since2000.
In April 2000, Ms. Esma Toprak (Bogazici University, Turkey)visited BP Chemicals Inc.; a side visit was arranged to the IllinoisInstitute of Technology. [more]
Prof. Dr. Ali El-Emam (Mansoura University, Egypt) was hostedby Bristol-Myers Squibb in the U.S.A. in August 2000. [more]
Mr. Tersoo Charles Gwaza (Shell Petrochemical Development Co,Nigeria) received training at Sasol Chemical Industries, South Africa,in June 2002. [more]
Mr. Kelvin Khisa (UNIDO Kenya National Cleaner Production Centre)visited Sankyo Co., Ltd production and research facilities in Japanin August 2002. In addition, side trips were taken to Shimizu Corporation,Tokyo Eco, the Hitachi Group, Fuji Film, Tokyo municipal governmentagencies and project sites, and the Japanese National Institute of IndustrialSafety. Mr. Zhang GuoHong (Sinopec, China) received training at BP ChemicalsInc. USA research facilities in Naperville, IL and production facilitiesin Lima, OH. [more]
