Project Details:
To increase awareness of the importance of electrochemistry and surface chemistry in environmental clean-up and remediation and in environmentally-friendly industrial chemical processes, and to disseminate the relevant information to the world-wide industrial and academic chemical community.This project is complementary of 130/33/98
The objective of the project is to bring together industrial and academic experts on the role of electrochemistry and colloid and surface chemistry in environmental clean-up, remediation and green chemical processes, concerning contributions to curing existing environmental problems and to preventing future ones through process integrated environmental protection. Workshop-style meetings will be organised, one in the USA/Canada and one in Europe. Specialists will be invited to these meetings as well as scientists from developing countries who can describe the particular problems their countries face.
The negative impact on the environment of industrial chemical processes and other fabrication procedures needs to be reduced through "cleaner" and more energy-efficient processes with recycling and by appropriate effluent treatment. Stored solid or liquid waste and contaminated land resulting from pollution problems in the past needs to be cleaned. There is a clear need to show what can be achieved using presently available technology and to point out future tendencies in technological development.
IUPAC, as the worldwide international organisation representing chemistry, is in a unique position to show these possibilities, show how pollution can be regulated and reduced, and contribute to the advancement and use of science and technology in treating problems of pollution. This is an excellent opportunity to show the contributions that electrochemistry, as a basically clean technology, as well as interfacial surface reactions can make to cleaning and protecting the environment.
The results of the workshops will be produced in the form of recommendations as to the most appropriate procedures to follow in a IUPAC report and to publication of the workshops proceedings of the in book form.
