Project Details:
Collecting, testing and dissemination of experiments in solid state and materials chemistry
| Project No.: | 2000-020-2-200 |
| Start date: | 2001-02-01 |
| End date: | 2006-09-08 |
| Division: | Inorganic Chemistry Division |
The objective is to provide tested experiments that will allow experiments illustrating solid state and materials chemistry to be introduced into the chemistry curriculum and experiments illustrating chemical aspects to be introduced into the materials science curriculum.
The experiments to be prepared can be classified into 3 categories:
- to be used in junior undergraduate laboratories (2nd and 3rd year)
- to be used in senior undergraduate laboratories (4th year elective courses such as "Introduction to Solid State Chemistry and Inorganic Materials" and "Inorganic Structural Chemistry"
- to be used for the senior undergraduate students (4th year) as projects and for master students as laboratory courses; these could be advanced and expensive since few students will use them.
Since in recent years the development in high technological materials is a very important issue, this type of scientific document will be very useful in the advancement of preparing new compounds.
Two sets of laboratory experiments in the field of solid state chemistry edited by Prof Dr. Lars Kihlborg were submitted to IUPAC commission II-3.
First Set:
- Preparation and characterisation of barium titanate (BTO) and BTO 'posistors'
- Synthesis of ferroelectric BaTiO3 via sol-gel route
- Fabrication of thin film CdSe photoelectrochemical solar cell and measurement of its efficiency
- Synthesis and study of the high-Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3O7-+A7Q.
- Synthesis of a '123'-superconductor
- Ionic conductivity in glass
- Synthesis of luminescent materials
- Synthesis of ferrimagnetic BaFe12O19
- Synthesis of X-zeolite
Second Set:
- Synthesis and properties of LaCoO3 and La0.6Sr0.4CoO3
- Preparation and characterisation of an intermetallic compound, V3Si
- Synthesis and crystal growth of MoO2 and characterisation
- Synthesis and magnetic characterisation of a hard magnetic material, BaFe12O19
- Synthesis and intercalation studies on the layered transition metal dichalcogenides, 2H-TaS2 and 2H-MoSe2
- Synthesis and characterisation of a metal-cluster compound, Cu2Mo6S8
Some experiments have been tested in the laboratories of Middle East Technical University, Chemistry Department and were found to be feasible and applicable. Some of them can be useful only in a well-equipped solid-state laboratory. Several experiments were added to the list developed in the Middle East Technical University Chemistry Department.
These are:
- Synthesis and Characterization of Lanthanide Phosphates
- Synthesis of Characterization of Tetracalcium Phosphate, Ca4P2O9, A Dental Cement
- Preparation of Gadolinium Tetraphosphate, Gd2P4O13, and a Study of its Structure by XRD and IR Methods
- Preparation of Copper Iron Sulfides by Solid-Gas Reactions
- Synthesis, Characterization and Conducting Properties of YBa2Cu3S6-x
- Synthesis of Sodium Dichromate, Na2Cr2O7, and Sodium Chromate, Na2CrO4
- Preparation of YBa2Cu3O7-x by Using Citrate Synthesis
This document is going to be ready when testing of the experiments will be done by another laboratory. The topic would be broadened considering the following fields in a systematic way:
- Synthesis of solids by solid state, solution, hydrothermal or sol - gel methods.
- Characterization using different Instrumental and chemical methods.
- Determination of magnetic, electrical, optical, thermal and mechanical properties.
