The purpose of this industry driven study is to provide a critical review and valuable recommendations for the practical handling of new elongational rheometry devices to a broad spectrum of users.
In the past few years, the capabilities for elongational rheometry and the variety of new commercially available test devices have grown due to further progressing developments.
These instruments are usually specified to certain limits where it becomes difficult to judge whether the results are reliable or maybe an artifact. Therefore, more experience regarding the use of these tools, the test procedures, and for materials preparation is highly desirable and crucial, especially for industrial applications and correct data interpretation.
The proposed project is partitioned into three steps:
- First, measurements will be carried out at interested and voluntarily participating labs on identical reference materials as a round-robin test. The results for the viscosity function are evaluated with respect to the various experimental setups and conditions.
- Second, specific tasks on more complex issues or obvious discrepancies will be investigated as joint work between various labs.
- Third, for conclusion the challenges and best practice shall be demonstrated with examples and published as guidelines how to obtain reliable results from the different experimental devices and how to exclude possible artifacts, e.g. from materials preparation or instrumental setup.
