Recent advances in bioanalytical chemistry: characterization and classification - Revision to the Orange Book CHAPTER 11

Project No.:2011-047-1-500
Start date:2012-01-01
End date:0000-00-00
Division:Analytical Chemistry Division
Objective:

To bring in terms of concepts and definitions a characterization and classification as well as related methodology of new fields of bioanalytical chemistry such as genomics, proteomics and others and to provide analytical, biochemical, and biomedical communities with critical evaluation on this topic.

Description:

Bioanalytical chemistry represents today a very modern, large and important topic of basic research and applied chemical analysis often performed by other than chemists and analytical chemists. Covering this topic by the Analytical Chemistry Compendium (the Orange Book) should bring big positives for both, Analytival Chemistry itself and the bioanalysts and other specialists. Bioanalytical chemistry tasks today do not represent only enzymatic, immunochemical and other affinity interaction to determine the bioanalytes, and so far there have been little efforts to essential analytical classification of new dynamically developing fields such as genomics, proteomics, etc. Through this project it is proposed to achieve the critical evaluation of concepts, terms and methodologies related to some new fields of bioanalytical chemistry.

The project deals with:

a) concepts of modern bioanalytical chemistry,

b) specific and at the same time rather general terms, features and requirements on analytical/bioanalytical methods, both biointeractions-based and bioanalytes and biomatrices applied,

c) sampling, sample handling like isolation/preconcentration, fragmentation, fractionation/separation, and analysis/ assay of fragments/ bioanalytes, to summarization and data presentation regarding genes/ proteins identification and structure,

d) experimental requirements, their parameters and evaluation.

In each part, the classification of terms and methodologies will be accompanied with a short introductory description and illustrating schemes. As a result, the project will evaluate critically the terms and methodologies in this field.

One special workshop will be organized within the project close to mid-term meeting to discuss and further develop the classification and evaluation of the topic. The technical report should be valuable used as a key instruction for wide audience from academic, biochemical, biomedical, to environmental and food-testing labs.
