Project Details:

Evaluated Kinetic Data for Atmospheric Chemistry

Project No.:2011-049-1-100
Start date:2012-01-01
End date:0000-00-00
Division:Physical and Biophysical Chemistry Division
Objective:

The objective of this project is to evaluate kinetic data for atmospheric chemistry and enhance its accessibility by placing the material on an interactive site on the web.

See database accessible at http://iupac.pole-ether.fr/

(see previous project 2009-031-1-100)

Description:

The IUPAC Subcommittee is continuing to update and expand the evaluations, which have been published in a series of ten peer reviewed articles in J. Phys. Chem. Ref. Data, and five recent articles in Atm. Chem. Phys journals. The updated evaluations have been incorporated on a website at the Centre for Atmospheric Science in the Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge, UK, www.iupac-kinetic.ch.cam.ac.uk.

The Group will meet in Montreux, Switzerland, June 6-8, 2012 to update data sheets and agree on recommendations for rate constants for selected gas phase and heterogeneous processes for which new information has become available. The panel will compile and submit for publication recommended data for heterogeneous reactions on liquid water and sulfuric acid surfaces and homogeneous reactions of halogenated organic compounds. These data are needed as inputs for the next generation of global and regional atmospheric models.

Progress:

> Aug 2013 - The task group met in Montreux, Switzerland on 12-14 June 2013; participants were R.A. Cox, M. Ammann, J.N. Crowley, M.J. Rossi, J. Troe, and T.J. Wallington (chair). Updates to the over 1000 data sheets coverings gas phase and heterogeneous phase reactions of importance in atmospheric chemistry were discussed.

The task group published a comprehensive evaluation of heterogeneous reactions on solid surfaces. The publication is M. Ammann, R. A. Cox, J. N. Crowley, M. E. Jenkin, A. Mellouki, M. J. Rossi, J. Troe, and T. J. Wallington, Evaluated kinetic and photochemical data for atmospheric chemistry: Volume VI – heterogeneous reactions with liquid substrates,  Atmos. Chem. Phys., 13, 8045-8228, 2013; http://dx.doi.org/10.5194/acp-13-8045-2013.

It covers the heterogeneous processes involving liquid particles present in the atmosphere with an emphasis on those relevant for the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere and the marine  boundary layer, for which uptake coefficients and adsorption parameters have been presented on the IUPAC website since 2009. The article consists of an introduction and guide to the evaluation, giving a unifying framework for parameterization of atmospheric heterogeneous processes.  Summary sheets containing the recommended uptake parameters for the evaluated processes are provided. The experimental data on which the recommendations are based are provided in data sheets in separate appendices for the four surfaces considered: liquid water, deliquesced halide salts, other aqueous electrolytes and sulfuric acid.  A total of 79 chemical processes are covered in Volume  VI.

The six snapshot volumes are readily accessible from: http://www.atmos-chem-phys.net/special_issue8.html

The Atmospheric Chemistry website that once was based in Cambridge/UK (www.iupac-kinetic.ch.cam.ac.uk) has a new home: http://iupac.pole-ether.fr/ which is supported by CNRS (France).
