Project Details:

Discovery of Elements with Atomic Numbers greater than 113

Project No.:2012-047-1-200
Start date:2012-11-01
End date:0000-00-00
Division:Inorganic Chemistry Division
Objective:

Remark: Joint IUPAP/IUPAC Working Party

The IUPAC/IUPAP Joint Working Party is charged with examining the priority claims for the discovery of elements with atomic numbers greater than 113.

Description:

Early in 2012, the Presidents of IUPAC and IUPAP appointed a new Joint Working Party (the 4th) to consider claims for the discovery of new elements.  The JWP has been charged with considering claims for the discovery of all the remaining elements in the seventh period for which no assignments have yet been made: namely elements with atomic numbers 113, 115, 117 and 118. Fully documented claims were submitted electronically by the 31 May 2012 deadline.

Responses from RIKEN (Japan), GSI (Germany), and Dubna (Russia) are under review.  The Morita RIKEN collaboration is associated with a discovery claim for Z = 113.  The Hofmann (GSI) collaboration made no discovery claims for new elements but addressed some progress in their continuing searches.  The Oganessian collaboration (Dubna-Livermore mostly) involves claims for elements 113, 115, 117, and 118. All the literature is now being critically studied by the JWP and the (electronic) exchange of comments and questions among us has commenced.
