Project Details:

Glossary of terms used in neurotoxicology and reproductive/developmental toxicology

Project No.:2013-001-2-700
Start date:2013-04-01
End date:0000-00-00
Division:Chemistry and Human Health
Objective:

An IUPAC "Glossary of Terms used in Toxicology" was published as an "IUPAC Recommendation" in 1993 (http://dx.doi.org/10.1351/pac199365092003) and updated in 2007 (http://dx.doi.org/10.1351/pac200779071153).  The "IUPAC Recommendation for Terminology used in Ecotoxicology" followed in 2009 (http://dx.doi.org/10.1351/PAC-REC-08-07-09), and for "Terminology used in Immunotoxicology" in 2012 (http://dx.doi.org/10.1351/PAC-REC-11-06-03), both compiled in conjunction with others, including the members of the task group. Two further areas of toxicology have now been identified where there is new terminology for which there is, as yet, no authoritative glossary. The aim of this project is to compile such a glossary with a future aim of consolidating it with all existing IUPAC toxicology glossaries into a single comprehensive up-to-date IUPAC document that will then cover the diverse but related specialties and subspecialties of toxicology.

Description:

The Task Group will compile from the current toxicology literature a list of terms, related to neurotoxicology and reproductive / developmental toxicology, that need to be defined. Current definitions will be noted and used as a basis for new definitions to be written according to the IUPAC approved format. The Task Group consensus definitions will be submitted to international experts in neurotoxicology and reproductive / developmental toxicology to ensure that they conform to current usage. Once a final consensus has been agreed, the resultant glossaries will be submitted to PAC for consideration for publication.  Once approved for publication, the definitions will be added to the consolidated IUPAC Glossary of Terms Used in Toxicology with its related database, and then will be disseminated as part of this glossary.
