Development and Recognition Programs for Women in Chemistry

Project No.:2013-002-2-022
Start date:2013-04-01
End date:0000-00-00
Division:Committee on Chemistry and Industry
Objective:

To build upon the great success of international events for women chemists held in honor of the International Year of Chemistry during the 2011 World Chemistry Congress in Puerto Rico, several events are being planned for the 2013 World Chemistry Congress in Istanbul, Turkey.    The activities include continuation of the successful international awards program for women in chemistry, a symposium highlighting the accomplishments of these women, and a mentoring/networking luncheon.

Description:

This package of opportunities will enable women and young scientists to accelerate their careers and become more integrated with the international chemistry community.

The "Distinguished Women Chemist/Chemical Engineer" international awards will provide international recognition for women in chemical sciences as part of the 2013 World Chemistry Congress in Istanbul. The awards will be given for accomplishments in research, education, industry, or scientific leadership.  Data show that women are underrepresented as awards recipients.  Receiving recognition from IUPAC provides a boost for women in their home countries and can result in increased opportunities and national recognition. The call for nominees was global and announced 31 Jan 2013. The hope is to follow up on the success created in the International Year of Chemistry by continuing the recognition event, creating momentum.

A symposium “Women in Chemistry: Gaining Momentum” featuring the recipients of the awards “Distinguished Women in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering”. This will highlight the research accomplishments of the recipients as well as provide recommendations for career success.

A mentoring and networking luncheon, including the award recipients, women participants in the World Chemistry Leadership Meeting, and younger women drawn from the Young Observers and Congress participants.
