Computer Applications in Nomenclature

Project No.:220-26-91
Start date:1991-01-01
End date:2001-12-31
Division:Inorganic Chemistry Division
Objective:

Essential unique nomenclature for molecules of all kinds.

Description:
No description available.
Progress:

Professor Dress has made considerable progress using tiling theory to develop algorithms to give names which are unique to complex structures. The theory gives unique mathematical cyphers for the structures and the structure can be constructed from the cypher. In principle, therefore, the nomenclature problem is essentially solved. The problem is the nomenclature cypher cannot be recognised readily by a chemist. This link now needs to be explored in depth to get chemically acceptable names. The Commission needs a theoretical chemist to assist Prof. Dress and we have in mind Ture Damhus, who has served the Commission previously for a short term.
