Project Details:

Characterization of Carbonaceous Materials and New Carbons

Project No.:232-1-91
Start date:1991-01-01
End date:2001-12-31
Division:Inorganic Chemistry Division
Objective:

National standards for the characterization of carbon materials such as A.S.T.M., D.I.N., I.S.O. etc. differ in important parameters (e.g. sample size, particle size, temperature, ...). In some cases these differences affect the results because specific requirements for carbonaceous materials have not been considered. Many of the national standards for the characterization of carbon materials compiled in an earlier Commission paper by W.S. Horton in PAC 51, 1561 (1979) are outdated. The objective of the project is to collect the actual relevant national standards, to point out differences, and to seek for each characterization method an expert's comment on the effect such differences may have on measurements with samples encountered in industrial and research laboratories.

Progress:
The Subcommittee has met, refined its definition of the task, and solicited input for its report. The report will compile and updatedescriptions and recommendations for methods used to characterizecarbon.
