Objective:

In the last few years a growing number of papers in analytical chemistry contain references to the possible use of the techniques or methods described for the control of chemical production processes. This illustrates the awareness of many analytical chemists that there is a great need for methods for the control of processes and the determination of the composition of process streams. The reasons are: 1. a better quality control of products as required by the consumer; 2. more stringent statutory regulations in relation to production and production processes; 3. stronger economic competition which requires a minimization of energy consumption, a reduction of the amount of raw materials used in the process and a process operation that minimizes the production of waste. For users it would be of great importance if the methods or techniques could be assessed with regard to use for their specific problems from the data and other information in the documents concerned. This asks for an unambiguous usage of terms and a proper description of the characteristics in relation to process control applications. It is therefore highly recommendable to provide guidelines for the aspects that should be addressed in articles dealing with process applications to make them of value for such an assessment.

This project was already proposed as a special project but not acceptedas such by the Union. Positive advise was obtained from the externalreviewer. Prof.G.D.Christian from the University of Washington, Seattle.He is also coworker in the Centre for Process Analytical Chemistry (CPAC).First document discussed at Bologna (August 1996). Second draft discussedat Geneva (August 1997). It was decided at Geneva to divide the projectinto two parts.
