Project Details:
Downsizing in Chemistry and Chemical Research with Special Reference to Analytical Chemistry (revised title)
| Project No.: | 510-33-95 |
| Start date: | 1995-01-01 |
| End date: | 1999-12-31 |
| Division: | Analytical Chemistry Division |
Not only in the chemical process industry but also in chemical research environmental aspects, safety and the availability of financial resources have become of major importance. As chemists we have the task to try to minimize detrimental environmental effects of our work, to maximize safety at minimal costs. Scale reduction is certainly one of the key factors in achieving these goals. The aspects to be considered will be: Down-sizing in quantity of materials, dimension of instruments, and devices and scale reduction in duration. This will be elaborated in three consecutive documents each dealing with the effect on the environment, safety and will consider the benefits with regard to costs. The most important issues to be addressed are: limitations at present, possible applications of the state-of-the-art of science and technology, and will end with defining of the fields which need extra attention and development. The projects may result in guidelines for the definition of new research proposals. It is a challenging project that seems to fit perfectly in the aim of IUPAC to give some outlook in the chemistries of the 21st century.
According to discussion at Bologna meeting, the author of this project Prof Y Goshi will invite about 10 persons to the working group dealing with this project. The first draft has not yet been received before the Geneva meeting. The first is expected February 1998, will be sent to the Commission Members and will be discussed at the meeting in August/September 1998. Project in stages 7 - 8. The project was discussed in Berlin and is in progress. The next draft will be mailed to the chairman of commission V.1 in March 2000.
