Objective:
The aim of this project is to provide a codification of the reliable methods for determining the solubilities of virtually all types of solutes, so as to assist the scientific community to better determine these important quantities. The Solubility Data Commission has been compiling and critically evaluating all types of solubility data for over 20 years. This has resulted in the publication, up to the present, of 65 volumes of the IUPAC Solubility Data Series. One of the major themes to emerge from this ongoing effort is the poor quality of many of the published data. Undoubtedly, this is frequently due to the use of inaccurate or inappropriate methods of solubility determination. Although the methods for determining the solubilities of specific types of substances have been reviewed from time to time, no comprehensive determination covering all types of solutes and solvents has ever appeared. This project will utilize the diverse expertise of members of the Solubility Data Commission and other recognised specialists to provide a critical guide to the reliable quantification of solubilities.

The editors met in Melbourne in January 1997 and all contributorswere contacted. The overall plan of the book remains unchanged.The book is divided into five major sections.

The first covers the fundamental thermodynamic and kinetic backgroundnecessary for a full understanding of solubility phenomena. The nextthree sections cover, at varying length, the major types of solubilitydeterminations according to the physical state of the solute: gases,liquids, and solids. The final section covers a number of technologicallyimportant areas whose character or traditions are sufficient differentto justify their separation.
Project near completion. The manuscript has been delivered to Wiley(UK), and proofs shall be ready by September 2002.
