Project Details:
Introduction of Data on Monitoring Networks in World Wide Web
| Project No.: | 620-23-96 |

The Commission has prepared an inventory and evaluation of monitoring networks. In order to retain usefulness, this inventory must be updated. This will be done by means of Internet, through the use of World Wide Web. The inventory will be incorporated on a "home page" of the Web, with the home-page address dissiminated both by print (e.g. announcement in Chemistry International) and via the Web itself. A user entering the home page is to be provided with entry to the database, which contains the attributes of the various monitoring networks: location, number of stations, sampling freq., species monitored, and the like. This database will also provide contact names for obtaining the data. Where data can be obtained electronically, pertinent information will be provided, but more importantly, by taking advantage of the Web, the user can be seemlessly and automatically connected to the remote database wherein that information is contained, permitting to directly download the desired data to his/her own machine. This feature will greatly enhance use of the database and, more importantly, of the data themselves. Maintaining the database electronically allows continuous upgrade of the database, incorporating new entries and modifications. It is hoped that this database will motivate various national monitoring organizations to provide data electronically through their own computer facilities tied to the Web.
