Request for Bureau Nominations, 2012/2013 Biennium

46th Council, 3-4 August 2011, San Juan, Puerto Rico

According to Statute 5.401, Council must elect:

  • Officers of the Union
  • Elected Members of the Bureau

Nominations for the various positions that become vacant at the end of 2011 must be received by the Secretary General at the IUPAC Secretariat by 3 June 2011, i.e., two months before the start of the Council meeting (Bylaw 2.221).

Each nomination must indicate clearly the position for which the candidate is nominated, and be accompanied by the candidate’s abbreviated Curriculum Vitae (CV) of no more than two pages. The abbreviated CV will be distributed to all Council delegates as part of the Council Agenda Book which will be available online. Any CV longer than two pages will be truncated. It is, of course, essential that only persons who have an active interest in, and preferably some experience of, IUPAC should be nominated. There should also be a reasonable assurance that any candidate nominated will maintain a high level of activity in the Union.

If you wish a biographical sketch of your candidate to be published in the July/August 2011 issue of Chemistry International, please ensure that the nomination and biographical sketch reach the IUPAC Secretariat by 1 May 2011. The biographical sketch should be no more than 400 words and should be written in a style suitable for publication in a news magazine. It should be accompanied by a black and white or color photograph of the candidate head and shoulders only, 9 cm by 12 cm, no passport photos please.

Nomination letter, abbreviated CV, and biographical sketch with photograph should be sent, preferably by e-mail, to: secretariat@iupac.org. Postal mail should be sent to the Secretariat at:

P.O. Box 13757, Research Triangle Park, NC 27709-3757, USA.

Bureau - Four vacancies

According to Statute 7.2, the Bureau consists of the Officers, the Division Presidents, and no less than ten other members elected by the Council, who are known as “Elected Members”. Elected Members are elected to a four-year term, and are eligible for re-election to a second four-year term. No National Adhering Organization shall have more than one Elected Member on the Bureau. Statute 7.2 also states: “the principle of fair geographical representation of Members shall be taken into account”.

At the conclusion of the 45th Council at Glasgow, there were ten Elected Members on the Bureau. At the 46th Council, the Bureau will make recommendations to Council as to the number of Elected Members (ten or more) who should be on the Bureau for the succeeding two years. At least 4 Elected Members will be elected at the 46th Council in San Juan, i.e., the minimum number of ten Elected Members (Statute 7.2) less the 6 Elected Members who continue in office until 2013.

Elected Members of Bureau whose terms continue to the end of 2013:

  • Mr. Colin J. Humphris (United Kingdom)
  • Prof. Stanislaw Penczek (Poland)
  • Prof. Elsa Reichmanis (United States)
  • Prof. Maria Van Dam-Mieras (Netherlands)

Prof. Werner Klein (Germany) (2004-2007, 2008-2011), is not eligible for nomination for an additional term

Prof. Ram S. Lamba (Puerto Rico) is eligible for nomination for an additional term

Prof. Natalia Tarasova (Russia) is eligible for nomination for an additional term

It is important for a vibrant organization that all vacant positions are filled after a fair and vigorous election process, so all nominations are encouraged.
