Objective

To initiate and coordinate relevant activity that will encourage IUPAC to address issues of global industrial importance, as directed in the Terms of Reference for COCI.

Progress

Earlier projects include the preparation of the White Book on Chlorine; this publication give an unbiased, scientifically-based documentation of issues important to the chemical industry. A Second Book on Environmental Oestrogens was published in 1998 as a special issue in Pure Appl. Chem. A project to assess and disseminate this special publication is on-going [See project 022/18/98]

During 1999, COCI initiated or collaborated in the following potential activities (further definition required):

  • Address discrepancies in the analyses of trace elements of interest to industry in water, such as lead. Major deviations have been reported by COCI Member, Prof. DeBievre, advisor to the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements in Belgium; cf., article in May 31, 1999 C&EN, page 29 [online] .

An article entitled: 'Quality of chemical measurements in water' has been published in Chem. Int. >Read introduction
  • Working Party membership in "Reaction Pathways and Processes in Green/Sustainable Chemistry"; a special topic issue of Pure Appl. Chem. was published as the July 2000 issue. COCI's role is to assure that industy's concerns about this publication, including the use of "Green" in this context, are addressed.
  • "Molecular Basis of Biodiversity", another potential Special Publication. COCI's membership on the Working Party will facilitate industrial input, including requested comment on early drafts.
  • "Genetically Modified Organisms in Foods", another potential publication in early stage of development. It could involve as many as seven scientific Unions, and lead to a PAC publication. COCI will make at least a financial contribution.
  • Working Party on IUPAC/Industry Relations - the Chair and another COCI Member are actively involved in this ad hoc group established in late 1999 by the incoming President of IUPAC. The goal is to increase more effective interaction with industry.
