Objective

Pillared clays and other porous layered structures (PLS) form a class of advanced materials, designed for their specific surface properties. They are synthesized from crystalline layered inorganic solids. The pillaring agent must be structurally robust and thermally stable so as to create permanent porosity. There is a wide range of layered inorganic solids, which can be pillared and there are different ways of pillaring. The scope of this study is twofold: (1) to propose a consistent nomenclature and terminology; and (2) to define the criteria to be fulfilled for a material to be called pillared.
