Project: Establishing International Comparability of Measurements of Trace Elements in Natural Water (IMEP-6)

Number: 240/6/93
Start: 01 January 1993
End: 31 December 1998
Project of
Chair:
Objective

The measurement of water quality is of paramount importance to human health. Despite being a theoretically easy matrix to analyze, water analyses are often in wide disagreement among laboratories. The IMEP-6 programme examined water analytical data quality on a global scale using certified test samples with reference values determined by a primary method of measurement (isotope dilution mass spectrometry).

Progress
More than 150 participants were involve in the programme. The reference values for 14 elements in natural and artificial water were established by the cooperation of 4 national laboratories in 3 countries.

Project Completed - publications resulting from IMEP-6 work:

Practitioner's report: IMEP-6: Trace elements in water; L. Van Nevel, Philip D. P. Taylor, U. Örnemark, John R. Moody, Klaus G. Heumann, and Paul De Bièvre, Accred Qual Assur 3 (1998) 2, 56-68.

Practitioner's report: The International Measurement Evaluation Programme (IMEP): Full graphical presentation of results from IMEP-6, "Trace elements in water", on the Springer-Verlag website; L. Van Nevel, Philip D. P. Taylor, Ulf Örnemark, and Paul De Bièvre, Accred Qual Assur 3 (1998) 11, 444-446
