Liquid crystalline polymers and low molar mass liquid crystals are becoming increasingly important technologically for application as high performance plastics and in electronic devices. They are also the subject of widespread academic study. Communications with IUPAP and the International Union of Crystallography have determined that no document exists to provide standardized definitions for the basic terms in use to describe these materials. IDCNS has asked Commission IV.1 to begin work to develop such a document for both polymeric and low molar mass liquid crystalline substances.
A provisional document has been prepared by M. Bar+APM-n, G. Luckhurst and R.F.T. Stepto, and distributed for review. The public comment period will end 31 Dec. 1999.
