Recently there is increased interest in ultrafast optical techniques for chemical analysis. Spectrochemical techniques using lasers at the femtosecond range can be used to characterise and quantify specific molecules at ultratrace levels in the rotational/vibrational states. A critical assessment of optical femtosecond spectroscopy is needed to provide an objective evaluation of this important and innovative area of chemical analysis. The project will define standards for performance criteria and outline perspectives.
