Project: Photocatalytic and Catalytic Effects on Aerosol Surfaces in the Atmosphere

Number: 620/24/95
Start: 01 January 1995
End: 31 December 1997

Objective

It is wellknown, that on the surface can take place very unusual reactions, which never proceed in a gas phase. Many aromatic and CFC compounds can react in dark conditions or under influence of light on the surface as donor or acceptor of electron. This first process will initiate the following transformation. The main objectives are:

  1. Analysis of the absorption CFC and aromatic compounds on aerosol substances.
  2. Reactivity of the absorbed molecules in dark and light conditions.
  3. Comparison with reactivity in gas phase.
  4. Evaluations of the role of reactions on aerosols particularly in comparison with gas phase.
  5. Recommendation for future investigation.

A report was presented at the IUPAC International Conference on Degradation Processes in the Environment, 24-28 May 1998, Dubrovnik, Croatia.

> Plenary Lectures published in Pure Appl. Chem. 70(7), 1319-1394 (1998) and symposium proceedings, including more than 30 contributed papers are to be published in a special issue of environmental journal Chemosphere (January 1999).
