Rationale: The signing of the World Trade Agreement has placed a greater emphasis on the role of science in the establishment of regulatory policies which may result in barriers to trade. The symposium will serve to open a dialogue on various issues related to sampling requirements, validation of testing methods, laboratory accreditation, check sample programs and results of monitoring programmes which will assist in identifying areas where the development of standard guidelines can support the work of bodies such as the Codex Alimentarius Commission.
Objective: A successful symposium will provide attendees with an appreciation of the various complex issues in planning and conducting a successful national monitoring program for residues found in foods to meet current international requirements.
This very well received symposium was held during the 1997 meeting of AOAC which took place in San Diego (California) from 7-11th September. A collection of 22 of the papers presented at the Symposium is published as a soft cover book by AOAC International under the title "Current Issues in Regulatory Chemistry", edited by Kay, MacNeil and O'Rangers.
