Start: 01 January 1997
End: 31 December 2000

Objective

- To provide a scientific forum for the exchange of technical information and activities related to the identification and determination of mycotoxins and phycotoxins.

- To create an environment for the sharing of knowledge between developed and less-developed countries.

- To exchange and discuss recent information, developments and findings in the field of exposure and risk assessments, and regulatory legislation.

- To improve choices of analytical procedures, greater awareness of analytical quality assurance, and updating of new developments in mycotoxin and phycotoxin analysis.

- To improve consumer protection.

The occurrence of these mold toxins in feeds and foods has harmful health effects on animals and man and causes serious economic losses both in domestic and international trade. The Symposium is of special significance as it will be held in Brazil where there is an active group involved in research on mycotoxin problems in foods and feeds and will extend the involvement of IUPAC in the South American region.

Progress

Considerable progress has already been made in the initial planning for this Symposium by putting together the Local and International Organizing Committees and by establishing contacts with potential sponsors as well as governmental and scientific organizations in the region.

The Proceedings of the Symposium are edited by W.J. de Koe, R.A. Samson, H.P. van Egmond, J. Gilbert and M. Sabino, and published and distributed by W.J. de Koe (2001) [ISBN 90-9014801-9].
