Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain The third edition of the European Symposium on Clinical Laboratory and In Vitro Diagnostic Industry, jointly organized by the Catalan Association of Clinical Laboratory Sciences, the Catalan Society of Clinical Biochemistry, and several companies, deals with automation of the preanalytical phase. The objective of this symposium is to discuss the impact and benefits of the automation of the preanalytical phase on quality and organization of clinical laboratories. This symposium is sponsored by IUPAC and the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC).
The symposium, to be held 21-22 April 2005 in Barcelona, Spain, will bring together experts on laboratory organization and other interested professionals to answer and debate a set of questions on practical aspects of the automation of the preanalytical phase. Examples of the questions to be answered and debated are as follows: Does the patient have real benefits related to automation of the preanalytical phase?; Do the economic costs of the automation of the preanalytical phase justify its implementation?; and Is turn-around time affected by automation of the preanalytical phase?
