Biotechnology for the Sustainability of Human Society
14–18 September 2010 Palacongressi, Rimini, Italy

The Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna is organizing the 14th International Biotechnology Symposium and Exhibition (14th IBS) to be held at the new Palacongressi di Rimini, the largest and most technologically advanced conference center in Italy.

Under the auspices of IUPAC, the IBS series is a premier international biotechnology event, held every two years on a different continent. The 14th IBS is promoted by the Italian and European Technology Platforms of the Life Sciences area, together with EuropaBio, EFB, ISEB, and ESEB.

The overall aim of the 14th IBS is to explore the advances, frontiers, and applications of biotechnology for a healthier, more sustainable future, and a knowledge-based international bio-economy. IBS also aims to strengthen relations between industry, research laboratories, government agencies, the private sector, and universities, concerning strategic issues for human sustainability.

Participants from the international biotechnology industry, a dynamic and R&D-oriented program, and highly qualified speakers from academia, governmental institutions, and industry, will be some of the major features of this event. There will also be sessions organized to promote international R&D cooperation and the establishment of industry-academia consortia suitable for European Framework Program applications, oral presentations selected from submitted abstracts, and special issues of relevant journals published by Elsevier, which is helping to organize the event.

Low registration fees, awards for excellent young scientists, low accommodation costs in Rimini, and post-conference activities such as excursions to major Italian cities, will facilitate the participation of all motivated colleagues and actors in the international biotechnology sectors.

The symposium will include the following sections:

  • systems biology for biotechnological innovation (jointly with SBH)
  • medical and pharmaceutical biotechnology
  • animal biotechnology
  • industrial biotechnology (jointly with ESEB)
  • biotechnology for bioenergy
  • food biotechnology
  • plant biotechnology
  • forest biotechnology
  • environmental biotechnology (jointly with ISEB)
  • contribution of chemistry to develop a biotechnology-based economy
