Pure and Applied Chemistry Recognizes the “Hand of Youth” in Shaping Chemistry

For nearly 10 years, IUPAC has been awarding the Prize for Young Chemistry “to encourage outstanding young research scientists at the beginning of their careers.” To date, 46 young scientists have been recognized with this award. As the International Year of Chemistry gets underway, the January 2011 issue of Pure and Applied Chemistry (PAC) features a collection of articles from past winners of the IUPAC Prize for Young Chemists, from inception of this annual competition in 2000 up to 2009. The issue is available online at www.iupac.org/publications/pac/83/1.

Fittingly subtitled “Perspectives and Challenges for the International Year of Chemistry,” this special issue of PAC will hopefully inspire and enthuse readers with fascinating insights into new and emerging aspects of the chemical sciences. The special issue, the brainchild of PAC scientific editor James Bull, features 17 articles covering a rich variety of topics such as the following:

  • Graphene oxide as surfactant sheets
  • Energy, supramolecular chemistry, fullerenes, and the sky
  • Chemistry meets nutrition: Toward a systems biological description of human metabolism
